BRIGHTON, Ont. – Orange Motorsports presented the first night of Applefest Shootout Weekend at Brighton Speedway. The DIRTcar Sportsman Western Series was in competition along with the Go Nuclear! Late Models, Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club, Pro Stocks and an open event for Comp 4 / Mini Stocks.

Begolo Bags Night One Win

The DIRTcar Sportsman Western Series competed in its first of two races of the weekend on Friday night. Chris Cunningham (No. 29k) and Brent Begolo (No. 16) led the field to the green flag in the 35 lap main event, however it was Dylan Davidson (No. 73) who jumped out to the early lead.

Two-time Applefest winner Cody McPherson (No. 7) took over the top spot on lap three and was out front until a caution five laps later. On the restart McPherson chose the outside line, but gave up the lead to Tristan Draper (No. 17). Draper looked set to walk away with the victory, however another restart on the 28th lap allowed outside pole sitter Begolo to challenge and overtake the top spot.

Begolo held off a hard charging McPherson for his first Applefest Weekend win. Draper held on to finish third, while Ryan Scott (No. 33) and Brad Rouse (No. 18r) finished fourth and fifth.

Mowatt Marvelous

Dale Caswell (No. r19) started alongside Phil Potts (No. 29) in the 30 lap Go Nuclear! Late Model Series A-Main. Potts led the opening two laps, but was quickly overtaken by Caswell, who went on to lead the next 13 circuits.

The top five drivers battled throughout the race as they worked around lapped traffic. During the middle stages of the race Brandon Mowatt (No. 46) flexed his muscle and took the lead from Caswell on Lap 17. Mowatt showed the field what made him the hottest driver in the second half of the season as he drove to his fourth win of the year over Charlie Sandercock (No. 57).

Austin King (No. 89) had a very solid performance and finished third amongst the veterans at the front. Potts and Caswell held on to complete the top five positions.

Barry Bounces Back

On July 15th Nathan Barry (No. 14b) was one corner away from winning with the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club’s feature at Brighton Speedway. Contact in turn four cost him the victory and it gave him reason to seek redemption on Friday night.

Barry started on the pole for the 15 lap feature with Paul Billings (No. b10) on the outside of the front row. The field had nothing for the No. 14b machine as Barry cruised to the easy win. Josh Power (No. 73) drove his way to a second place finish while Matt Barbour (No. 37), Cory Winters (No. 33) and Billings finished third through fifth.

Ramsay Right Back To Victory Lane

31 cars were on hand to compete with the Pro Stock division on Friday night in preparation for the Quad Track Duel on the Dirt finale Saturday. Outside invaders Kyle Pelrine (No. 47x) and Jason Fontaine (No. 1j) lined up on the front row for the 20 lap feature with Fontaine setting the early pace as leader.

By lap 7, home track regular Justin Ramsay (No. 03) had powered his way to the top of the leaderboard as he passed Fontaine for the lead. Fellow weekly competitor Wade Purchase (No. 53) also marched his way to the front of the field. Ramsay and Purchase finished first and second when the checkers flew while Rob Murray (No. m1) was third. Dave Bailey (No. 49) and Doug Anderson (No. 72) completed the top five.

Flieler Finishes First

A number of visiting driver were on hand to compete in the Comp 4 / Mini Stock open race. Keith Dunk (No. 22) and Derrick Merkley (No. 78d) started on the front row, but were very quickly passed by Marc Dagenais (No. 15). The Cornwall Motor Speedway regular was dominate and led the first 11 laps before getting caught up in a crash and breaking the left front wheel of his car.

The lead was handed over to Adam Flieler (No. 11) and he was able to hold on for the final 14 laps for his third win of the season. Adam Wells (No. 48) patiently worked his way to a second place finish over 2017 champion Tyler French (No. 0), Dustin Bode (No. 77) and Matthew Moore (No. 14).
